Professor Alfred Kung’u is one of Kenya’s pioneering pathologists and a founding figure in the growth of pathology education at the University of Nairobi. He devoted his career to advancing medical training, diagnostic practice, and mentorship within the university and the wider medical community.
After qualifying in medicine, Professor Kung’u specialized in pathology and joined the Department of Human Pathology, where his dedication to academic excellence and professional integrity earned him widespread respect. In July 1976, he was promoted to Professor and later served as Head of Department, leading the department’s expansion into a regional hub for postgraduate pathology training and research.
A passionate educator, he mentored generations of medical students and residents who have gone on to serve in hospitals, universities, and laboratories across East and Central Africa. His leadership strengthened the quality of Kenya’s laboratory services and emphasized the vital role of pathology in patient care.
Upon retirement, the University of Nairobi honored Professor Kung’u for his outstanding service and contribution to medical education. His legacy continues to inspire excellence, professionalism, and a commitment to science within the Department of Human Pathology.
