Message from the Chairman

Prof Angela Amayo, MBChB, MMed, Human Pathology (university of Nairobi)

The Department of Human Pathology  is  the leading  centre of Pathology training  in the region. Over the years, the Department    has played  a key role in teaching of  undergraduates in the disciplines of Medicine, (MBChB),  Pharmacy (BPharm), Dental Sciences (BDS), Nursing Sciences (BSc Nursing) and more recently BSc in Medical Laboratory Sciences and Technology (BSc. MLST). The  Department  has also offered teaching to postgraduate students taking Surgery (MMED Surgery), Internal Medicine (MMED Medicine) MMED Pediatrics & Child Health  and Dental Sciences (MDS).

In recent years   Telepathology and  other e-learning facilities like  I – Path  have been  added  to traditional  methods of teaching. This  has enhanced and enriched  teaching.   The high  volume  and diverse  pathology material available at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH)   makes the Department of Human Pathology  the centre of choice for training  and  research in Pathology

Apart from teaching, the Department  provides diagnostic and clinical Services to Kenyatta National Hospital,, Kenya’s  largest teaching and referral Hospital. The Department  also offers consultancy services to private and Faith Based Hospitals throughout the Republic of Kenya.  Staff members are involved in  technical assistance to the Ministry of Health in the areas of laboratory accreditation, Blood Transfusion Services and Forensic Pathology

The Department of Pathology has four (4) Thematic  units each one headed by a unit head. The 4 thematic Units are:Unit of Anatomic Pathology which also including  Forensic Pathology -Dr. Emily Rogena; Unit of Clinical Chemistry - Mr. Francis  Maina; Unit of Immunology -Dr. Chistopher Gontier and Unit of Haematology and Blood Transfusion - Dr. Fatmah K. Abdallah

 Programs

 Apart from supporting other departments in the School of Medicine  we offer  a Bachelors degree and three  Masters postgraduate programs. These programs have attracted students from across the region. Some  of our alumni  hail from Rwanda, Malawi, Tanzania, the Seychelles and Southern Sudan.

 

  1. BSc in Medical Laboratory Sciences & Technology (BSc MLST) a 4 year undergraduate program
  2.  Master of Medicine in Pathology  (MMED Pathology): was launched in 1985. This is a 3 year general Pathology course. Due to  rapid expansion of knowledge, and especially in the field of molecular biology,  curriculum review is  at  an advanced stage  which will increase the course duration to 4 years
  3.  Master of Science in Clinical Cytology (MSc. Cytology)  was mounted in 1998 and is a 2 years course. This unique course is the only one of its kind in the region and is  gaining  popularity  due to  increasing  demand for cancer screening services.
  4. Masters in Clinical Chemistry, a 2 years course.

There are over 70 Pathologists and 20 Cytopathologists who have graduated from the Department. Many of these graduates are holding senior positions in the Ministry of Health and in the institutions of higher learning in Kenya and beyond.

 In addition to  the Master’s programs the Department  has ongoing PhDs

Faculty

The teaching staff are  experienced and highly  qualified in their areas of subspecialization. Majority of the staff  are active Fellows or associates of distinguished  international professional organizations such as The college of Pathologists’ of East, Central & Southern Africa (COPECSA), The International Network for Cancer Training & Research (INCTR), The Royal College of Pathologists’ of UK (RCPath), The World Federation of Haemophilia (WFH) and The Royal College of Australia.
