A collaboration between Department of Human Pathology, Department of Ophthalmology and Velux Stiftung has made it possible to have a Retinoblastoma research project spearheaded by Dr Lucy Njambi, Co Principle Investigator with Dr Helen Dimaras from University of Toronto, Dr Wairimu Waweru and Ms. Beatrice Omweri as the project research assistant.
The project hosted a introduction workshop with the theme ‘Building Capacity in Molecular Cancer Research through Retinoblastoma’ on 14th-15th May 2024 at KAVI-ICR Boardroom. Day one was the overview of the Velux Stiftung Retinoblastoma Genetics Project, genetic of Retinoblastoma, Principles of Molecular Genetics testing in blood and tissue including collection, library preparation and principles of next generation sequencing. With Day two covering the overview of bioinformatics and bioinformatics in NGS.
The workshop was graced by Prof Gichuhi, Chairman of Department of Ophthalmology with other guests including Dr. Kimani, Head Retinoblastoma Program Kenya, Dr. Muema, KAVI, Mr. Josiah,CEO- COECSA and a representative of the Ministry of Health.
Also in attendance were 40 participants including Mmed pathology student and Mr. Simon Njau, KNH Histology laboratory. The research is scheduled to start mid this year at KAVI. For more information on the project contact Dr Waweru.
