The University of Nairobi’s Department of Ophthalmology, in partnership with the Department of Human Pathology, organised the Annual Workshop for the Retinoblastoma Genetics Project held on 24th and 25th July 2025 at the KAVI-ICR Boardroom.
This two-day forum brought together researchers, clinicians, postgraduate students, and stakeholders, including Dr. Wairimu Waweru, Dr. Josephine Rioki, Dr. Lucy Njambi, ( Project PI), Dr. Walter Jaoko, Dr. Kimani, Ms. Beatrice Omweri (Assistant Researcher) and Dr. Helen Dimaras (Project PI, University of Toronto) to share updates on the project’s implementation and engage in discussions on crucial topics such as bioethics, integrity in genomics research, translational cancer genomics, tumour specimen collection protocols, and cost-effectiveness of RB genetic testing.
The workshop also featured sessions on protocols for translating research results into patient care, as well as a Kenya RB Genetics Working Group meeting to discuss sustainability and future directions of the project.
Through these engagements, the departments aimed to strengthen capacity in molecular cancer research and advance our collective efforts to improve diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes for children affected by retinoblastoma in Kenya and beyond.
