Prof Mwanda interview on Sickle Cell Anaemia

Professor Walter O. Mwanda is a leading Kenyan Haematologist, widely recognized for his dedication to advancing the care and understanding of blood disorders—especially sickle cell disease. In a recent appearance on Citizen TV’s Uliza Daktari segment on 21st September, Prof. Mwanda delivered an inspiring message of hope to patients and families affected by sickle cell disease. He emphasized that with proper management and lifestyle adjustments, individuals can live full, meaningful lives, stating:

“You can live a normal life. Currently, we have about 15% of our sickle cell population well above 25 years of age. To me, it is not so much of sickle cell but the way the individual handles the fact that he or she has sickle cell.”

Beyond his clinical and academic work, Prof. Mwanda advocates for the establishment of dedicated sickle cell care centers in Kenya to improve early diagnosis, treatment, and psychosocial support. His voice continues to shape national awareness and inspire a new approach to chronic disease care—grounded in knowledge, compassion, and resilience.
