H.E FCPA Fernandes Barasa hosted a delegation from Rainbow For Africa UK (R4A-UK), led by Chairperson Dr. Francis Wanyama on 2nd July 2023

R4A-UK is an international organization that promotes health and social interventions in communities in deprived settings. 

The county government of Kakamega will partner with the organisation together with Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology for their first project dubbed, Project ECHO. 

On 16th June 2023, Kakamega County Deputy Governor H.E Hon. Ayub Savula Friday morning, on behalf of H.E  FCPA Fernandes Barasa, chaired a meeting between Rainbow Africa - UK and Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) at the County headquarters, Kakamega.

Some of the deliberations during the meeting were implementation of Africa - UK projects and the Kenya - United Kingdom Health (KUKHA) projects in Kakamega County. The County Government of Kakamega will implement the project in collaboration with MMUST.

The free neuropathology and neurosurgical medical camp was organised by the Makueni government in partnership with the Brain Tumour Association of Kenya (BTAK) on 1st-3rd June 2023 in three hospitals.

Lead in the medical camp was Dr Parmenaus Minda Okwemwa, a consultant neuropathology and Chairman of the Brain Tumour Association of Kenya, and Prof Christopher Musau, a specialist neurosurgeon. They were joined by other neurosurgeon residents and medical students from the Faculty of health sciences.

For many year, Cancer screening has helped in detecting cancer before it spreads to the organs making it easier to treat. Early detection may mean less treatment and less time spent recovering. 

On 21st -22nd June 2023, Ms Josephine was joined by a team of Medical professionals including nurses, cytologist and laboratory technologist to give free breast, cervical and prostate cancer screening in Riva health care Clinic in Nakuru.

Mr Francis Wanyama serving as a member of the Busia County Health Transformation committee joined other members in auditing the Medical services offered by Sio Port Level 4 hospital in Busia County with the aim of improving their services.

In attendance was Busia County CEC health, Hon Beatrice Nakholi and area MCA, Hon Camulus Obada.

Mr Francis Wanyama in partnership with Rainbow 4 Africa UK Organization organized a medical community outreach activities in Busia county hospitals.

The Rainbow 4 Africa UK responds to humanitarian need and makes sustainable improvements in healthcare though their work and training of local services and clinicians. The doctors who were part of the activities were Dr Massimo, Dr Venu, Dr Evvone, Dr Chavi, Dr Laura and Dr Diana.

Ms. Josephine Rioki lead a group of well-wishers named ‘Little sisters of Hope’ to support ‘‘A girl child’’ with sanitary towels in Nyamira County, for comfort, and confidence during exam time.  In addition to the provision of sanitary towels, the team gave a talk on Menstrual Health and hygiene to the girls and Sexuality to both girls and boys. Pencils were donated to class 6 and 8 candidates to use in the forthcoming examinations. 624 sanitary towels were donated. Snacks were also provided during the visit to the schools.

Good body hygiene is one of the best ways to protect yourself from getting gastro or infectious diseases such as COVID-19, colds and flu. Washing your hands with soap removes germs that can make you ill. Maintaining good body hygiene will also help prevent you from spreading diseases to other people.

Globocan estimates that in Kenya, there are about 3,000 new cases of childhood cancer diagnosed each year.  However, these numbers are likely underestimates due to inadequate reporting of cases to the national cancer registries.  In addition, many children with cancer are often misdiagnosed as other conditions that present with clinical symptoms and signs that are similar to those of childhood cancers.

Dr Parmenaus Okemwa, a consultant neuropathologist and Chairman of Brain Tumour Association of Kenya (BTAK) lead a campaign on awareness of brain conditions at the grassroots level which kick off at the Moi County Referral Hospital (MCRH) in Voi, Taita-Taveta County. The campaign aimed at raising awareness on neurological ailments and brain tumour diagnosis with an emphasis on early detection.
