AMELSTUN Street Fest Outreach

The Association of Medical Lab Students - UON invites you to join us in spreading love and joy to the street kids in Nairobi's CBD through our Street Fest initiative. The goal is to celebrate with these children, provide meals, and share gifts that will make this season special for them. All together, we can light up their lives with kindness and compassion.

MLST CURRICULUM REVIEW MEETING

On 30th October 2024, The department held a MLST Curriculum Review meeting with the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians & Technologists Board (KMLTTB), Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) representative at the Prof. Alfred Kungu’s Boardroom

The meeting was graced by the Faculty Dean, Prof George Osanjo, Chairman, KMLTTB, Dr. Titus Mutwiri and Registar, KMLTTB, Mr. Patrick Kisabei.

DEPARTMENT STAFF PARTICIPATE IN UNIVERSITY ANNUAL SPORTS DAY

The annual sports competition is an important event for identifying and showcasing sports talents at the University of Nairobi. This years' sports day will involve faculties and campuses competing in soccer, basketball, rugby volleyball, handball, swimming, Athletics , Badminton, Scrabble, Darts,creative games and tug of war.

The competitions took place on 14th October 2024 at the Chancellor's court/ sports ground  in Main campus at 8.00am. Our own staff, Mrs Joyce Maganga was part of the Faculty team to participate in the annual sports day.

 

Dr Wanyama guest speaker at 29th AKMLSO conference

The 29th AKMLSO (Association of Kenya Medical Laboratory Scientific Officers)   conference was held at Royal Grand Swiss Hotel Kisumu from 15th -19th October 2024 with the theme being “Guardians of Quality and patient safety: Biomedical Laboratory Scientists.”

The guest speaker was Dr. Francis Wanyama speaking on The Genome: New Era in Cancer Biomarker Discovery.

Congratulations Dr. Josephine Rioki

The 71st UON Graduation ceremony occurred on Friday, September 20, 2024
at the Chancellor’s Court with the theme being “Transforming Society with Adaptive and Innovative Graduates”. 

Among the graduates, was our own, Dr Josephine Rioki receiving her Doctor of Philosophy in Clinical Cytology. Congratulations Dr. Rioki!

Also graduating from the Department was Ms.Peris Stella and Ms. Norrine Mutheu with Msc in Clinical Cytology.

MESSAGE OF CONDOLENCE ON THE PASSING OF DR. FREDRICK OKINYI

With great sorrow, we announce the passing of Dr. Fredrick Okinyi, a lecturer in the Department of Human Pathology, and the Head of the Hematology and Blood Transfusion Unit, University of Nairobi. He died on 21 September 2024 while undergoing treatment at the Mater Hospital.


Dr. Okinyi was an outstanding haematologist, a brilliant academic, and a beloved teacher dedicated to the education of medical students and service to patients.

Dr. Josephine Rioki as a member of Good Clinical Practice working group based on ISO /IEC 17065

Dr. Josephine Rioki was a member of Good Clinical Practice working group based on ISO /IEC 17065 whose mandate was to draft and ratify the criteria document for use by KENAS. Her contribution was in the following areas:

Molecular Cancer Research through Retinoblastoma

A collaboration between Department of Human Pathology, Department of Ophthalmology and Velux Stiftung has made it possible to have a Retinoblastoma research project spearheaded by Dr Lucy Njambi, Co Principle Investigator with Dr Helen Dimaras from University of Toronto, Dr Wairimu Waweru and Ms. Beatrice Omweri as the project research assistant.
