Examination Period in the Department

The undergraduate and postgraduate students in the department have been undertaking their examinations in the department. This was scheduled with the MLST students starting their examination on 12th February 2024 to the Postgraduate students who will start on 26th February 2024.

Lecture on developments in diagnosis of Lymphoma

On Wednesday, 14th February 2024, the brilliant Prof Lorenzo Leoncini from Department of Medical Biotechnology, University of Siena gave an informative lecture on Lymphoma with comparison between the two classified proposals.

Prof Lorenzo was introduced by the Department Chairman, Dr. Peter Maturi and the session was moderated by Prof. Joshua Nyagol.

FHS Inaugural Cultural Week

The Faculty of Health Science (FHS) invited staff and students to the Inaugural Cultural Week and Prom Event which was scheduled from 12th to 17th February 2024. The aim of the event was to celebrate and appreciate the diverse cultures within our community through creative expressions of art as well as cultural awareness.

Fostering Collaboration with other Education stakeholders

On 9th February 2024, the Ministry of Education hosted a meeting with the visiting President of Thomas More University, Belgium, Professor Stijn Coenen together with University of Nairobi (UoN), Government of Kenya officials and other Kenyan Universities. Great ideas emerged on forstering collaborations in Kenya in terms of education. UoN was represented by Dr. Ezekiel Mecha, Director Communication Mr. Orindi and Dr Francis Wanyama.

Training on Haemophilia at the Department

Kenya Haemophilia Association team lead by Dr Peter Kibet held a one week training from 27th November to 5th December 2023 on treatment, management and diagnosis of Haemophilia at the Department of Human Pathology. The trainees were a 3 Doctors, 4 Nurse and 2 Physiotherapists from Kitui County Referral Hospital and Hola County Referral Hospital.

UON 70th Graduation Ceremony

The University of Nairobi on Friday, 15th December 2023 graduated over 5,700 graduands, amongst them from the Department of Human Pathology; three Mmed pathology and forty seven Bsc Medical Laboratory Science Technology students.

The 70th Graduation Ceremony was presided by the CS, Education, Hon. Ezekiel Machogu and in attendance was the Ag Chancellor and Chair of Council, Prof. Amukowa Anangwe who confer Degrees and award Diplomas.

Dr Barasa at the IUIS Conference

On 27th November to 2nd December 2023, Cape Town (South Africa) will be hosting the International Congress of Immunology (IUIS). This is the world’s leading conference in the field of immunology. Every three years, the IUIS Congress assembles immunologists from industry, university, health providers and independent research organizations.

Did you know there are 48 blood groups systems?

In addition to ABO and Rh, there are 48 other recognised blood types called blood group systems. This was mentioned in a talk by Prof Robert Flower from the Australian Red Cross Lifeblood in a research by his PhD student, Dr Rachel Githiomi from KNBTS. 
 

The two had visited the department to present their findings and partner with the department in forming a national reference laboratory for blood group and genotyping. The research discovered there are more blood group systems among Kenyan that are not recognized.
