Kenya Haemophilia Association team lead by Dr Peter Kibet held a one week training from 27th November to 5th December 2023 on treatment, management and diagnosis of Haemophilia at the Department of Human Pathology. The trainees were a 3 Doctors, 4 Nurse and 2 Physiotherapists from Kitui County Referral Hospital and Hola County Referral Hospital.

The University of Nairobi on Friday, 15th December 2023 graduated over 5,700 graduands, amongst them from the Department of Human Pathology; three Mmed pathology and forty seven Bsc Medical Laboratory Science Technology students.

The 70th Graduation Ceremony was presided by the CS, Education, Hon. Ezekiel Machogu and in attendance was the Ag Chancellor and Chair of Council, Prof. Amukowa Anangwe who confer Degrees and award Diplomas.

MASTER OF MEDICINE IN HUMAN PATHOLOGY:

On 27th November to 2nd December 2023, Cape Town (South Africa) will be hosting the International Congress of Immunology (IUIS). This is the world’s leading conference in the field of immunology. Every three years, the IUIS Congress assembles immunologists from industry, university, health providers and independent research organizations.

In addition to ABO and Rh, there are 48 other recognised blood types called blood group systems. This was mentioned in a talk by Prof Robert Flower from the Australian Red Cross Lifeblood in a research by his PhD student, Dr Rachel Githiomi from KNBTS. 
 

The two had visited the department to present their findings and partner with the department in forming a national reference laboratory for blood group and genotyping. The research discovered there are more blood group systems among Kenyan that are not recognized.

In any learning institution, training is a key component in education. The Wondfo-UON training center was officially launched on Thursday, 23rd November 2023 by the Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic Affairs, Prof Julius Ogen’go together with the President of Wondfo biotech company, Prof Li, CEO Peng and Vice President Mark Xu.

The National AIDS & STI Control Program (NASCOP), along with the HIV Clinicians’ Society of Kenya (HIVCSOK), Infectious Diseases Society of Kenya (IDSK), and the International Society for Infectious Diseases (ISID) organized the first-ever joint conference on Infectious Diseases and HIV. The conference was held on October 23rd to 26th 2023 at Sawela Lodge, Naivasha

Every year, the Kenya Renal Association has organized conferences  that has been attended by reputable and notable number of medical practitioners and industry sponsors. This year’s theme was ‘Multidisciplinary Approach to Kidney Care by Medics Management Services’.

It was held at PrideInn Paradise Beach Resort Convention Centre and Spa on 27th August – 30th August 2023. Dr Anne Barasa was privileged to present two presentations. One on Immunology Testing in Transplantation and the other one on Genetic Testing in Chronic Kidney Disease.

On 17th November 2023, Wondfo Biotech team together with Clinical Chemistry staff trained undergraduate students from The University of Nairobi and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology at Wondfo-UON Training Centre,Kenyatta National Hospital. 

To celebrate the National Tree planting Day on 13th November 2023, members of staff, Dr Barasa and Dr Walong participated in the Tree Planting at Ngong Road - Hospital Road junction. This was facilitated by Dr Alfred Odhiambo, a senior radiologist, and ardent enthusiast of the green environment. Dr Odhiambo provided the seedlings and prepared the ground for planting. This exercise was overseen by Nairobi County Environmental Team, Kibra Subcounty.

On Wednesday, 8th November 2023, Dr Edwin Walong will be presenting on Neonatal Heamochromatosis while Dr Anne Barasa will be moderating the webinar during the UON-KNH webinar rare disease series. The session will from 2-3.30pm. All are welcome.
