The Department of Ophthalmology, University of Nairobi, in collaboration with the Department of Human Pathology and the Kenya AIDS Vaccine Initiative (KAVI)-Institute of Clinical Research, successfully hosted the Third Retinoblastoma (RB) Genetics Workshop on 23–24 July 2026. The workshop was held as part of the Velux Stiftung Retinoblastoma Genetics Project under the theme "Genetic Counseling and Interpretation of Genetic Results."
The Department of Human Pathology joins family, colleagues, and the wider medical fraternity in celebrating the life and legacy of Professor David Githongo Gatei, a distinguished scholar, mentor, and pioneer in pathology whose contributions profoundly shaped medical education and healthcare in Kenya and across Africa.
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Prof David Githongo Gatei who passed on 20th March 2026. Prof Gatei (DG) was a prominent Professor at the Department of Human Pathology. He was a part of the early and foundational academic leadership in UON’s medical school and helped build capacity in diagnostic pathology and laboratory medicine in Kenya.

The Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) stood out in excellence as the best performing faculty in this year’s edition of the University’s Staff Recognition Awards.
Ever the beacon of scholarly and professional excellence in healthcare, the faculty emerged as the best performing faculty at the 2025-2026 Financial Year. This cemented the faculty as an embodiment of the standards to which the University aspires.

Professor Walter O. Mwanda is a leading Kenyan Haematologist, widely recognized for his dedication to advancing the care and understanding of blood disorders—especially sickle cell disease.
